Emerald gemstones have been synonymous with the colour green since ancient times. Called by some the “Stone of Successful Love,” emeralds are gems denoting inspiration and infinite patience, embodying unity, compassion and unconditional love. Like rubies, there’s a story that they can fade if love dims – and so the gift of a shiny bright green emerald reinforces a love living long into the future.

Emeralds are gem-quality specimens of the beryl mineral family with a rich, distinctly green colour. Beryl comes from beryllium which occurs in very small amounts in the Earth’s crust. Conditions must be perfect for there to be enough beryllium alongside the chromium and vanadium that give the stone its strong green colour. This is why emeralds are rare and only found in a small number of locations.

Alexandrite’s main characteristic is the ability to change colour if exposed to a light source rich in red rays. The most valuable Alexandrites are brilliant green, and then switch to a fiery red under artificial light. Naturally, such a prominent colour change is highly sought after. Alexandrites from Brazil display a total colour change and are therefore highly prized.
